Ostrinia nubilalis is broadly polyphagous, with 17 different host plant families recorded. A major host criterion is apparently a stem thick enough to tunnel into, with survival being higher in thicker stems. Economic hosts include the stems of maize, potato, celery, sweet pepper, tomato, beans, hop, oats and millet. Ornamental flower stems may be also eaten.
The ECB is widespread in Europe, western and central Asia, northern Africa, and introduced into North America.
